Design is planting a creative seed…

20 November 2017

Designing, animating and leading creative sessions is what Tony, the Design Director here at Dodgems and Floss absolutely loves

We sat with the miniature creative firecracker and talked about what lights his design fuse.

Where did you start your journey in the creative world?

I started at a really early age, all the way through primary and secondary school I was armed with a pencil and a pad. I lived for my art lessons, I would dread English, Maths and Science but I was always focussed and knew that I wanted to be a designer.

Where did you learn your skills?

After completing my schooling, I headed to Portsmouth university to study design for interactive media, which was great. I learnt all about the creative process and how to come up with ideas that lead to unique design.

After finishing university, I started work with Tesco.com, which taught me a lot about working with internal teams and dealing with a large and varied workload. I then moved on to ITV and worked on some really cool projects like the rebranding of Loose Women and the Krypton Factor. I’ve also been lucky enough to work on projects with companies such as Google, Facebook, Virgin and UBS.

All experiences that have led me to acquire new skills and ways of working to deliver projects across a number of different industries.

What is your favourite thing about being a designer?

I love to make things, I’m a creator and there’s nothing like getting totally immersed in a project. I love the little details, things that people don’t even notice. That’s what gives me the most pleasure.

What is the most rewarding part of being in the creative industry for you?

Being able to bring an idea to life is brilliant. You start off with a small creative seed and you get to plant it and help it grow into a new brand or website. It is so rewarding to see projects you’ve worked on out there in the real world making a difference to businesses and customers.

What do you do at Dodgems and Floss?

My job is to look after the creative side of a project. I sit in on the creative workshops with clients and help create the perfect brand, animation or web journey with them.

I’m also heavily involved with user experience, my main goal is to keep the user in mind for any kind of development we have been asked to help with. We promote frictionless usability, that means anything that distracts the user shouldn’t be there.

What’s best project that you’ve worked on?

That’s an easy one; Dodgems & Floss. It was always a dream of mine to have my own agency and helping found, develop and grow Dodgems & Floss has been the best project I’ve worked on, by a country mile.

And finally, if you could give one piece of advice to someone looking to get into the industry, what would it be?

Never give up, there is always something you can do, get involved in or innovate that will help you learn and progress. If you’ve got a vision for something, share it and go for it. The worst that will happen is you learn from it.
