Every project brings a new opportunity. It’s our chance to invent something new or try something we always wanted to.
It’s far too easy to be complacent and get stuck in the same rhythm, patterns and styles we know well. We actively stay curious, search for new styles and modes of expression, pushing ourselves out of the comfort zone is key.
That’s why our team went to throw pottery with Luke Eastop in Ramsgate.
To make great work, you have to learn from open minded creatives. Luke shared his creative journey and process with us. A systematic process based on geometric investigations. His work takes inspiration from his time as a graphic designer, exploring typography, map-making and his interest in mathematics and geometry.
All of Luke’s pieces had their own unique character, each one carefully considered from concept to execution, crafted to last and be treasured. Every piece told a story.
‘Every mark and detail in Luke’s work had to have a reason and purpose, which I guess mirrors our work. It was great to see similarities in our ways of working, but in a completely different medium. And such a lovely day, to just be away from screens, connecting with colleagues.’

The digital landscape moves at such a pace, it can feel relentless. Throwing pottery allowed us to slow down, visualise what we wanted to make and get our hands dirty.
The tactile nature allowed us to disconnect from information overload and focus on the task at hand.
It’s harder than you expect, but we did get some great results.
‘I thoroughly enjoyed embracing the ‘happy accidents’ that emerged along the way. The calming, hands-on nature of working with clay was deeply fulfilling, creating a peaceful, meditative environment. The satisfaction of the messy process, and the creation of a piece in the company of my lovely d&f colleagues was a fantastic day to remember.’

We came away from the experience feeling more invigorated to do good work. Challenging each other constantly to find new avenues for inspiration, that helps us think differently about our processes and the outcomes.
