I studied Multimedia, Technology and Design at the University of Kent, I was 1 of 4 women out of 90 students in my year. There were even fewer of us in the computer science courses. It was a bit of a shock when I first started, I really couldn’t believe so few women wanted to study these subjects. When I left Uni, I went straight into web design and have loved every minute of it.
I went down the design route and after some time, switched to focus on the development side of things. I love to see a digital project evolve from start to finish, from design through to code and into launch. Having an understanding for design and development gives me oversight of how a project should run, resulting in the best outcome for clients. I sit at a computer all day creating and coding digital experiences but I wouldn’t have it any other way, I love what I do.
So why are there so few women in this industry? There’s only 20% in the entire digital sector. The percentage of digital leaders who are women is even less. I am in that small percentage but it shows you how much you can accomplish if you put your mind to it. I never thought in a million years that I would be running my own business.
The percentage has definitely grown over the years in this industry since I started out, but we need to encourage more girls to study and join the digital world, to create amazing experiences and share their creativity.
The digital party is where it’s at, and everyone should grab a ticket.
